FLORENCE, S.C. — These are not your run-of-the-mill Florida Everblades — not anymore.
In an overwhelming display of speed, skill and strength Sunday afternoon, Southwest Florida's team sent a message to the rest of the ECHL with an 8-4 thrashing of the Florence Pride.
"When teams come into our building and when we go on the road we want them to know that we're not going to back down and that we're going to play physical and be in your face," Everblades head coach Gerry Fleming said. "That's how you win hockey games. It's the difference between winning and losing, you're either tough to play against or easy to play against."
Only 2,080 fans were present at the Florence City-County Civic Center to witness Florida (2-1-0) exorcise some demons in a building where success hasn't come easily. The Pride (1-1-1) were 7-1 at home against the Everblades before Sunday.
Reggie Berg scored his first two goals of the season as seven different Florida players found the back of the net. The line of Keith Anderson, Brian McCullough and Brent McDonald continued its hot streak, accounting for three goals.
Rookie Daniel Boisclair was solid in net for the Everblades, stopping 30 of 34 shots to earn his first professional win. He got plenty of help from a defense that had been porous the night before in an 8-5 loss at Augusta. Blueliners Matt Pagnutti and Peter Reynolds even got in on the scoring act with a goal and an assist apiece.
"They're a better team. The Everblades are a helluva hockey team," said Pride first-year coach Perry Florio. "(Florida team president and general manager) Craig (Brush) and Gerry have built a great hockey team and I give them a lot of credit for the players they brought in and the effort they put forth tonight."
Just 1:45 into the game, McCullough picked up a turnover and skated with Anderson in a 2-on-1. McCullough sped down the left side, drew the defenseman over and slid a cross-ice pass onto Anderson's stick at the hash marks. Anderson buried the puck past Florence's goalie for his third goal in two games.
Former Everblades defenseman Jason Metcalfe, who dropped the gloves with hard-hitting forward Brandon Coalter in the second period, conceded this was a different Florida team than he had grown accustomed to seeing the past few seasons.
"Last year it was always fun to play Florida," he said. "This year we know now that when we come to play Florida we're going to be in for a battle."
Message sent.
NOTES: Forward Roberto Bissonnette was scratched from the lineup for the third straight game. He is listed on injured reserve, but Bissonnette said before Saturday's game at Augusta there was a mixup with his immigration paperwork from Canada. He said when he crossed the U.S. border, one of the border guards forgot to stamp his visa form because he got distracted talking hockey. Bissonnette said he hopes to have everything cleared up before Friday night's home opener against Louisiana. ... Defenseman Ryan Van Buskirk was the second scratch again with a sore shoulder.

Victor mit 1 Tor und 2 Vorlagen, damit kommt er auf 3 Punkte in 3 Spielen. Scheint ja leider in einer ziemlichen Looser Truppe zu spielen
